He holds a masters degree in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia, England, in 2006. The study was fully sponsored by the British Chevening Scholarships from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He is also an economist trained at the School of Economics, University of Indonesia, graduated in 2001.
His professional career started in 2000 as associate and economist at PT Puri Consulting. In 2002, he was appointed as senior associate and project manager for the firm\'s various clients which were mainly prominent mining companies that include PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, Santos Ltd, and PT Freeport Indonesia. He was also an editor of Political and Economic Brief, the firm\'s exclusive monthly publication for its clients that focuses on regional autonomy issues and risk assessments resulted by the policy.
In 2002, he was invited as a young leader by the United States Department of State to attend meetings with the US Department of Defense (The Pentagon) in Washington D.C, and also the US Pacific Command in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to participate in analyzing the counter terrorism policies of the United States.
His writings on political and economic issues are published in various national newspapers, such as Kompas, the Jakarta Post, Suara Pembaruan, Sinar Harapan, etc.

He gains a strong basis in the grassroots levels in all over Indonesia from his long organisational experience and also being the chief of the National Coordination Team (SATKORNAS) Barisan Ansor Serba Guna (BANSER) since 2000. He is also the deputy chairman of the Ansor Youth Movement of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), an organisation chaired by Mr. Saifullah Yusuf, the former state minister for acceleration of less developed regions (Menteri Negara Percepatan Pembangunan Daerah Tertinggal).Previously he was the Chief of Jakarta Regional Coordination Team (SATKORWIL) BANSER in 1995-2000.

His writings on political and security issues appeared in the Washington Post, Yale Global Online, the Jamestown Foundation in the Washington, the Japanfocus, the Strait Times, The Australian and The Jakarta Post. He holds two masters degrees from the UK , both in international relations, from the University of London 's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and the University of Cambridge . He is also well known as one of the most influential young political activists. He was the chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PRD) and was a political prisoner for 3.5 years during the Suharto regime. In 2005, he joined the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan), a political party chaired by former President Megawati Soekarnoputri, and currently serves in the party's central board. Currently, he is the executive director of ResPublica Institute, a think tank focuses on political-economy, defence and technology policies, in Jakarta.
His expertise covers a wide variety of issues: China , East Timor, Latin America , Indonesian politics, political parties and defense. His thoughts also periodically appear in various major newspapers, such as Kompas, the Jakarta Post, Tempo, Suara Pembaruan, Sinar Harapan, etc.
